Mickey Joseph just landed a historic role in athletics at the University of Nebraska.

Joseph, 54, was named the interim head coach of Nebraska football after Scott Frost was fired on Sunday (September 11). He will run the program for the rest of the 2022 football season, NBCSports reports.

With the promotion, Joseph has become the first Black head coach in the football program's history and across all sports at Nebraska.

"After the disappointing start to our season, I decided the best path forward for our program was to make a change in our head coaching position," Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts said in a statement Sunday. "Associate Head Coach Mickey Joseph will serve as our interim head coach for the remainder of the 2022 season."

The new head coach started with Cornhuskers as a quarterback, playing from 1988 to 1991.

He was hired onto Frost's staff as an associate head coach this year after his time with LSU football from 2017 to 2021.

Joseph held the position for three games before earning the position as interim head coach.

Since its founding in 1869, the University of Nebraska has never seen a Black head coach across its 22 sports teams.

Nebraska started the season 1-2 and was handed another disappointing loss to Georgia Southern on Saturday (September 10) before Frost's firing.

The former head coach went 16-31 during his five seasons with the Huskers.
