The results of this presidential election will likely boil down to several key swing states that will be closely watched on November 5.

According to the polls, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin could all be reasonably won by either Democratic nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris or Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump.

Keep scrolling to find out more about why results from these states are highly anticipated and still up in the air.

Arizona

From 1952 through 2016, Arizona voted Republican except for when former President Bill Clinton won the state in 1996. Trump won the state by a narrower margin than other recent GOP candidates in 2016, In 2020, President Joe Biden became only the second Democrat to take the state in roughly 70 years, winning over Trump by 0.3 percent.

Georgia

Georgia was reliably Republican from 1972 through 2016 with the exception of Clinton's win in 1992. In 2020, Biden narrowly won the state by 0.2 percent, a margin of 11,779 votes, over Trump.

Michigan

After nearly 30 years of supporting Democratic nominees, Michigan flipped to Republican in 2016 with Trump defeating Hillary Clinton by 0.2 percent. Biden won the state back by 2.8 percent in 2020, a margin of roughly 154,000 votes out of more than 5.5 million cast.

Nevada

Nevada has been one of the nation's best trackers of the presidential election winner. The state has voted for the candidate who won the White House in 27 of the last 30 elections. Nevada voted for the losing candidate in 2016 as Hillary Clinton was defeated by Trump in 2016. Biden won the state over Trump in 2020 by 2.5 percent.

North Carolina

Trump won North Carolina over Clinton and Biden in 2016 and 2020 respectively. However, the former president carried the state with less than 50 percent of the vote both of those times. Trump narrowly edged out Biden by roughly 1 percent in 2020, his smallest winning margin in any state.

Pennsylvania

In 2016, Trump narrowly won the state by 0.7 percent. Biden narrowly took the state back in 2020 by 1.2 percent. Pennsylvania was one of three "blue wall" swing states that went narrowly for Trump in 2016 after almost 30 years of voting for Democratic presidential candidates.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin was also one of the three "blue wall" states that Trump won in 2016 after nearly 30 years of voting for a Democrat. Biden flipped the state back in 2020 by a margin of roughly 20,000 votes out of nearly 3.3 million votes cast.
