A Texas family has broken a century-long streak of having only boys, as they are finally expecting a baby girl.

According to KPLC, Michael Sherman Jr., a local firefighter, and his wife, Joacquia Sherman, announced Sunday (September 7) that they’re expecting a baby girl, the first born into the Sherman line in over 100 years.

“I just feel honored that finally, we are the ones bringing the baby girl into the world — finally, after over 100 years. It’s amazing,” Sherman Jr. said while surrounded by generations of family at the gender reveal.

The last time a girl was born into the family was in 1917. Her name was Orah Belle Sherman, who is the great-great-aunt of the soon-to-be-born baby girl.

“It’s like a monumental thing,” grandfather Michael Sherman Sr. said. “I have three boys. My dad had two boys. His brother had two boys. So, it’s never been nothing but boys, boys, boys.”

According to the family, Orah Belle, the last girl to be born in the Sherman line, was active in the civil rights movement and a respected figure in Atlanta.

“She was a trailblazer,” great-grandmother Lydia Robertson said. “She met a lot of civil rights leaders, and she made an impact in Atlanta.”

The Shermans say they’re excited to see what the newest family member will do with her life.

“I love her. No matter what path she chooses, we will be with her,” Robertson said. “She’s going to always have support here from us.”

The baby girl, due in March, will join her 5-year-old brother, Mekhai.

“She’s going to know that she made history in the Sherman family,” grandmother Chantene Newman said.
